Welcome to the McCracken County 4-H Youth Development Program

Welcome to the McCracken County 4-H!

The 4-H/Youth Development program here at your McCracken County Extension Office, courtesy of the University of Kentucky, creates opportunities and supportive environments for youth and adults to become capable, competent and caring citizens. And while that might just sound boring, it is actually fun and entertaining. Don’t believe us? Check out our website or contact one of our agents if you have any questions.

Learn How To Cure A Country Ham

The 4-H Country Ham Project is taking shape. This is a fun way for families to enjoy learning how to cure their own Country Ham. Kids ages 9-18 work with McCracken County 4-H Volunteers at Broadbents in Eddyville, KY on 4 different Saturdays beginning in February.

Each session is about an hour long and the kids get to pick out their own hams, wash them, salt them and then sock them so they are ready to be judged at the KY State Fair in August. Kids 9-13 must do a 4 minute speech based on the steps it takes to cure a Country Ham.

Kids 14-18 do a 6 minute speech on the dry cured hams of the world. The cost is $60 and youth get to keep 2 hams. This is a fun project and we are happy to answer any and all questions!!! Deadline is December 1st 2017.
