The National 4-H Culinary Challenge was held on Octo-
ber 3rd 2017 in Dallas Texas at the State Fair- grounds. Teams representing various states around
America must create a single serving dish which con- tains items that are unknown to the
participants. They must create a nutritious dish using the products pro- vided which are generally
fresh fruits, grains, vegeta- bles, meats and dairy products. The youth are al- lowed to use a
two-burner electric hot plate to pre- pare their dish and must sanitize, plan, create, plate and
clean up their cooking area within a 40 minute time period. Upon completion they have an addition-
al 5 minutes to create a presentation for the judges when they present their plated dish. The
presentation must talk about the process of sanitizing, cross con- tamination dangers, ingredients,
health benefits and finally my plate values for their dish.
Previously, McCracken County “Twisted Sifters” 4-H culinary team won the Kentucky State competition
in June of 2017 in order to advance to nationals. This
was the 2 time McCracken 4-H has advanced to
state and the first-time making it to nationals since starting the competitive club. Although the
team did not win Nationals they did finish in the top 10 teams in the nation.
